Gerontology Intensive Workshop Series
An Interdisciplinary Workshop Series for Service Providers
Who Work Now or Want to Work with Older Adults

The Series covers the major topic areas in gerontology, and strongly benefits individuals currently working in or preparing to work in this rapidly growing field. There is a Certificate and Continuing Education Units (20 to 25 CEUs) for individuals who register for the series and attend at least 8 of the 10 workshops. This 25-hour (10) workshop series offers a focused, practical approach to understanding, assessing and intervening with a variety of service concerns affecting the diverse aging population on Cape Cod and the Islands. Registrants will acquire the basic knowledge and skill set needed to work effectively with older adults in a variety of service settings. You will learn assessment skills, practical intervention skills, and a range of available Cape and off-Cape resources that can be accessed to aid this population.

Swim headquarters is a flurry with activity--the ribbons have arrived, the t-shirts are all over town, the Swim caps are expected this week and the harbor water is beckoning. The town is ready for your spirited arrival.

Just a reminder, please note that the Swim is starting from Long Point at 10:30AM (instead of 11AM), and at low tide. The incoming tide will be with you on your way to shore.

PROVINCETOWN'S HOMETOWN SWIM

It's not surprising that Provincetown is considered "hometown" to countless people who have lived, worked or visited here over the years. Whether townie or tourist - or yearrounder, resident, part-time resident, summer visitor or worker - all share a strong and sometimes possessive connection to this spiral spit of sand.

The Swim for Life - September 6 will be 21 years - is an event that brings visibility to this confluence of harbor, harborside and overlapping histories. It is a gathering of the Provincetown diaspora, a spirtual home for many.

For native daughter Joanne Roderick Belmore and her 14-year-old daughter Savannah, the event is an opportunity to support community health services and the challenge of swimming across Provincetown Harbor, an idea she never thought of until the Swim for Life was created. Now living in West Yarmouth where her daughter will enter Dennis-Yarmouth High School this fall, Joanne, a nurse, has strong family ties to the community and visits here often, where her two other children hang out at the West End Racing Club.

At the other end of the state in the Berkshires, Jim Youngerman arose on the day of the Swim last year, looked across Laurel Lake in Lee, spontaneously dove in and swam over and back - about a mile and a half - "a parallel universe fresh water Swim for Life" he wrote in a letter. After the swim he contacted his friends and sent in $61 in pledges. "Parallel" swims such as this have occurred in Florida, California and New York City over the years with folks who were unable to be present but wanted to paricipate in this unique Provincetown tradition. Jim's connection to the Cape tip goes back to the 1960s. He will swim again this year, where, he's not sure. Stay tuned.

This year's event on Saturday, September 6, will once again be held at the Boatslip Resort, 161 Commercial Street. Swimmer registration begins at 9:00 am, boaters and kayakers at 8:30 am. The public is invited to greet the swimmers beginning at 11:00 am, followed by the Mermaid Brunch on the Boatslip deck at noon. Entertainment will be provided by Magic of Steel, followed by award presentations. The 15th annual Celebration of Life Concert, produced by John Thomas is association with the Swim, will be held at the Meeting House the night before at 8:00 pm. Prayer Ribbons, which commemorate both those who are living and deceased, will be available to the public at both venues. All events are free and open to the public.

Business sponsors include: the Provincetown Banner, the Boatslip Resort, Paul Mitchell, Far Land Provisions and New England Blade. The event is also sponsored in part by the Provincetown Tourism Fund.

Bailey Bob Bailey Swim for Life t-shirts, which are 100% organic cotton, are available at Venture Athletics at Whaler's Wharf, the AIDS Suport Group at the Firehouse next to Town Hall, at artSTRAND at 494 Commercial Street, and at weekend events.

This quintessential community tradition raises funds for the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod, Helping Our Women, Outer Cape Health Services, Provincetown Rescue Squad and Lower Cape Ambulance.

BARNSTABLE COUNTY FAIR OPENS JULY 18 ...
A World Cup bull riding rodeo and the disco icons Village People will headline the 2008 Barnstable County Fair that opens Friday, July 18 at the Fairgrounds on Rte. 151 in East Falmouth. It will run daily through July 26. The Fair was established in 1844.

The Barnstable County Fair has been an annual summer tradition on Cape Cod for 164 years. The Fair is a place where families can spend the day together and share experiences they can only experience at the Barnstable County Fair.

There are animal shows, 4-H demonstrations, petting zoos, horticulture displays, rides, games, live music, arts & crafts, food and commercial vendors with various arts and crafts for sale.

The Fair features the best in wholesome family fun and entertainment. More than 85,000 people attend with an anticpated 90,000 this year. The Barnstable County Fair is a great place to get up close and personal with the farm animals, enjoy a world of fun foods and the thrill of Rockwell Amusements Midway rides.

Rock Harbor Hosts Special Olympics

Thursday July 17th is the 25th Annual Special Olympics Fishing Tournament at Rock Harbor. The Festivities begin at 9AM with the Harbor beautifully decorated to celebrate the athletes annual fishing tournament.

The Captains and Mates donate their 4 hour charter trip. This year marks the 25th year of the event. Come cheer on the participants as the boats leave the harbor at 9:15AM and return at 1:15PM for the awards, live raffle and cookout.

Founded in 1993, Dream Day on Cape Cod is a non-profit organization with a mission of "bringing a ray of sunshine into the lives of seriously ill children and their families". It was born in the dreams of a man who, while struggling with cancer himself, helped children facing life-threatening illnesses by giving them a respite from the world of hospitals and treatments where they could enjoy the peace and tranquillity of nature. Tim Falvey originally founded "Dream Day on the Sound" in Connecticut and before he died in May 1993 he had hoped there would be other Dream Days. That same year, Margaret Kennedy created Dream Day on Cape Cod in tribute to her friend's dream and with the belief that:

With faith in God, hope for the future and love in our hearts, we can make a difference.

Today, Dream Day on Cape Cod is still dedicated to the special children it serves. Through its Summer Program and Dream Day Family Events, Dream Day provides a fun and peaceful haven where friends are made and memories cherished for the children and their families.

The Mission: To build a boat out of cardboard, glue, caulking, tape, and paint and race a 200 yard timed course for Fun, Fabulous Prizes, and Coveted Trophies, and perhaps even win the most Coveted Rubber Duckie Trophy. This is a perpetual award that gives the winner (fastest time) the bragging rights for one year to be defended on its anniversary.

Kooharian Family runs '08 Falmouth Road Race in dedication to their son, Anthony

The Kooharian family of Mashpee has been running the Falmouth road races since 2001. This year, they are running to raise funds for Dream Day on Cape Cod, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving families with children who have serious or life-threatening illnesses. Dream Day offers families the opportunity to spend one week at their camp in Brewster at no expense to them.

They are running the race this year in dedication to their son Anthony who passed away last spring from a progressively debilitating disorder called metachromatic leukodystrophy. Anthony loved Cape Cod and especially the Falmouth Road Race where each year at mile marker 4 he enjoyed watching the runners and the wheel chair racers whiz by.

“The Kooharian family’s goal is to raise $3,000.00 this summer so other families may enjoy our beautiful Cape Cod summers that Anthony loved so dearly.”

Hands on The Arts Festival

10th Hands on the Arts Festival

"Hands-on-the-Arts" means a chance to explore the ARTS; painting using real easels, jewelry making , fiber arts ,collage and many more media, taught by professional artists: and the ever popular sculpture made from found objects!

The Gerwick Puppets (est. 1974) will perform their amazing show both days. Eastham Library's Natalie Marsh will be reading "WILD READS" and making masks of characters in the stories .

The National Seashore, the Wellfleet Bay Audubon, and Center for Coastal Studies will each participate with a variety of Nature presentations.

Live music will be performed in the Gazebo by the Nauset World Music Ensemble, Tripping Lily, and Bart Weisman and his jazz group, with vocalist Carol Wyeth.

The Juried craft show will showcase original works for sale by more than 50 local artists. These artists enable us to bring FREE FUN to children. This is a FREE Festival for Kids of All Ages sponsored by the Eastham Cultural Council. Come and support them!

1) www.MyCape.com – Our community-based Web site for each town on Cape Cod, featuring content generated by the public. Visit the site and click on the town of your choice. Then click on ‘submit article’ or ‘submit photo’ (found toward the center of the page). Fill in the fields on the form – don’t forget the image validation. Then click on submit. The article or photo will appear within 24-48 hours on MyCape.com. Questions? Contact Pat @ ppry@capecodonline.com or call 508-862-1543.

2) Online Calendar and Cape Week - To post an event on the online calendar database and in CapeWeek magazine, visit capecodonline.com, click on the entertainment tab and click on "post an event." If you would rather not submit online, press releases may be faxed to 508-771-3292, Attn: Cape Week; or mailed to Cape Week, 319 Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601. (E-mails are not accepted.) Items submitted online are copied from our calendar database and published in Cape Week. Please keep in mind that space in Cape Week is limited and items run as space allows. The deadline is at 3 p.m. Thursdays, eight days before publication.

"WAITRESS PUTS OUT FIRE IN WOODS HOLE, MAY 26th, 12 p.m.

-By Cloe Grace, Age 9 - Sherborn, MA "This is a picture of Isel with my brother Jagger 3, my grandfather Howard Fisher and sister Anabelle who is 6."

Isel Garcia-Rena put out a fire Monday, May 26.
Our family was trying to find a place to eat in Woods Hole. We found a place called Phusion. Isel was our waitress. After she gave us our drinks we noticed there were flames and smoke coming from the outside of Handworks (the store across the street from Phusion). The street quickly filled with smoke and it was hard to see outside.

Our family rushed outside to get a better view. Isel ran over to Handworks with a big bucket of water and dumped it on top of the fire which had started in a trash barrel. The fire was nearly out and Isel brought one more bucket of water to make sure the fire was out. Five minutes later a fire truck came just to make sure the fire was not going to start again. When we all came inside again to sit down we thanked Isel so much for being our hero."

The answer to Thursday's question posted on the MyCape blog for how many bass were caught on a single umbrella rig by a Charter in Cape Cod Bay was five!
Not all keepers, but as Rob Connery said in his article in Thursday's Cape Cod Times, "They were kind of small, but did I mention there were five of them?"

Fire departments from several Cape towns, and as faraway as Falmouth, responded to a multi-alarm fire at the home of Eastham Chamber members, David and Lucy Jalbert (Jalbert Masonry and Lucy J's Glass, 480 Massasoit Road). Although no one was hurt, the extensive fire damage to their home and business has forced the Jalberts, and their duplex tenants, Stan & Danielle Langston and their children, to locate shelter elsewhere.

Having issued the previous paragraph as an eblast Monday night, I arrived at my office the next morning to witness, once again, what makes our community so special. Windmills, ocean beaches, school building overruns were all put aside. I was deluged with responses offering clothing, food, homes, and even the organization of an old fashion barn-raising.

Right now the Jalberts are simply attempting to sort everything out. When they are ready, we are a community ready to help.

Patty Pry

Pat oversees the administration of MyCape and regularly introduces the site to the residents and visitors of the Upper and Mid-Cape communities.

Pat has been ‘networking’ on the Cape for almost 25 years. For 10 years, she handled all aspects of marketing and advertising for New Seabury Resort and Real Estate and was the first Executive Director for the Mashpee Chamber of Commerce. She resides in Mashpee and loves to go day-tripping with her family all over the Cape – a perfect complement to her position as the MyCape Coordinator.

Marcia Duggan

Marcia introduces MyCape throughout the communities of the Lower and Mid-Cape regions.

An award-winning photographer, Marcia teaches photography through CapeCodSoul and is an avid runner (two-time Boston Marathon finisher). She also stays active fishing, traveling and skiing with her family. Marcia resides in Orleans with her two teenage children. Her favorite summer hot spots are Rock Harbor and the Nauset Outer Beach.
